What is Google Earth Outreach?
Google Earth Outreach is a program that helps provide nonprofits and public benefit organisations with the knowledge and resources they need to visualise their cause and tell their story in Google's mapping tools. The online program consists of an overview of mapping tools, success stories from nonprofits using Google mapping tools, tutorials, information about our grants program, as well as other resources for nonprofits. This short video is a great introduction to the program.

When is Geo for Good Down Under?
The Geo for Good Down Under workshop will be held on November 7-9, 2012 and will run from roughly 8am to 6pm on each day.

Which costs are covered as part of Geo for Good Down Under, and what are participants expected to pay on their own?
The training and materials are provided free to participants, as well as lunch. The participants cover the cost of any travel to and during the workshop, such as airfare, hotel accommodations, additional meals, etc.

What can I expect at a Google Earth Outreach workshop?
The workshop will teach highly practical tools which organisations can use to collect, host, analyse, visualise, and publish map data using the power of the cloud. The workshop also provides a chance for nonprofit professionals to network, discuss common issues and challenges, and learn how to train others within their organisation and the greater communitySee here and here for descriptions of past Google Earth Outreach workshops. 

Is there an agenda? What will be covered?
We plan to cover a variety of Google mapping technologies. Special attention will be paid to new Google tools available for nonprofit organisations, including Google Maps Engine, Google Earth Engine, and others. See our Agenda page for more info. 

Can anyone attend Geo for Good Down Under? How much does it cost? 
This hands-on workshop is limited to 75 participants. Due to limited space, we may not be able to accept every workshop applicant, and no more than 2 representatives from each organisation will be accepted. Attendance is free, following acceptance into the workshop through Google’s application process.

In what languages will the training be given?
Regretfully, we can only offer the training in English at this time.

Application Process

What are the important dates I should remember as an applicant?
September 18, 2012, 11:59pm EST (Sydney time): Application Deadline extended to September 28, 2012.
September 28, 2012: All candidates who submitted applications by the original deadline will be notified of their application status via email on or before this date. Candidates submitting applications after September 18, will be notified of their status in early October.

What are the requirements for workshop participants? What qualities or skills will be given preference during the application review by Google?
This workshop is intended for Australian and New Zealand nonprofit technology specialists. Ideal participants will meet one or more of the following requirements:
  • Are employed at a nonprofit or consult for nonprofits
  • Are currently working on mapping projects, or have datasets they want to map.
  • Demonstrate ability to implement and make effective use of Google mapping technology within their organisation.
  • Possess training experience and intend to train others within their organisation or in the larger nonprofit community on Google mapping technology.
  • Have intermediate-to-advanced technical experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Google Earth and/or Google Maps Engine
    • GIS experience
    • Web/multimedia development
    • Programming with the Google Maps API or other Google Geo APIs

How many applicants will be accepted?
75 applicants will be accepted to participate in the workshop.


Can more than one individual from the same organization apply?
Yes, but no more than 2 individuals from any given organisation will be selected to attend, due to limited space.

Will any meals be provided to participants?
Lunch on all 3 days will be provided to participants free of charge.
